The Vinification
The grapes were harvested September 7 - 19, 2001, then gently whole-cluster pressed and barrel fermented in premium French oak barrels, 41% of which were new. After undergoing 100% malolactic fermentation, the wine was aged on its lees for nine months, bottled in June 2002, and released in the spring of 2004.
The Clones
The vineyard’s 30 acres of Chardonnay are planted with three different clones. The blend of clones in the 2001 vintage is 52% See, 38% Rued and 10% Spring Mountain.
Tasting Notes
The classic Golden Delicious apple aromas of the See clone are nicely complemented by a floral note of gardenia from the Rued clone and hints of tamarind and spice from the Spring Mountain. The palate is lively and crisp, with excellent structure and balance; a touch of honey and toffee, hazelnut and marzipan — contributed by the French oak and aging on the lees — harmonize with the elegant fruit. The wine opens up in the glass and ends with a long finish.
